The Predictive and Investigative Safety Assessment group seeks a Toxicology Senior Principal Research Scientist with a strong desire to contribute to a highly innovative company focused on transforming lives. Located at our San Diego site, this role provides scientific leadership in nonclinical safety assessment, designing, executing, and interpreting toxicology studies to support research programs. The individual will bring expertise in mechanistic and investigative toxicology to inform target selection, risk assessment, and candidate selection, primarily for small molecules but potentially for other modalities. Key Duties and Responsibilities Lead, plan, and manage toxicology programs from target identification to candidate nomination. Build collaborations between Preclinical Safety Assessment and research teams. Perform early safety assessments and oversee characterization of research compounds. Collaborate with in vitro, in silico, and safety pharmacology groups to address liabilities. Coordinate with external partners to design and execute toxicology studies. Support progression of therapeutic candidates through dose-range-finding and GLP toxicology studies. Implement multisite strategies for safety assessment within Vertex. Communicate project information clearly to teams and leadership. Collaborate externally to enhance toxicology capabilities. Design and execute investigative toxicology studies. Develop mechanistic hypotheses to explain toxicity findings. Knowledge and Skills Experience representing safety in cross-functional teams. Proven track record in mechanistic and investigative toxicology. Expertise in drug discovery. Strong scientific and problem-solving skills. Ability to influence decision-making in matrix environments. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Education and Experience Ph.D. in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or related field, or equivalent experience. 10+ years in the pharmaceutical or related industry. Additional Information Salary range: $164,000 - $246,000. Includes bonuses, equity, and benefits. Hybrid or on-site work options.
