JOB TITLE: Contractual Interpreter - Vietnamese



REPORTS TO : Specialist, Office of Multilingual Achievement



DEFINITION: Under general supervision, provides foreign language interpreting and translation services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Facilitates communication between Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) employees, teachers, students, clients, and the public by providing foreign language interpreting and translation services. Translates the spoken words of students and clients into English. Performs sight translations of forms and documents.


Provides Spanish language interpreting and translation services for the Baltimore County Infants and Toddlers Program. Assists clients in accessing community resources for learning and recreational purposes. Provides service coordination for Spanish speaking families.


Contacts families and schedules appointments to facilitate participation in the early intervention program and family support activities. Provides oral interpretation in preparation for and during assessments. Provides written translation services.


Provides sight translation and interpretation to program staff. Translates educational materials, forms, and other documents into English and other languages. Provides advice and guidance to agency staff and employees regarding language interpretation issues.


Assists in school learning activities. Assist students individually or in groups to reinforce the learning situation established by the teacher. Reads to students and assists them in effectively using school resources and facilities. Helps students with self care activities.


Assists in developing outreach plans for foreign language speaking communities.


Performs other duties as assigned.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education, Training and Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (Pre-employment):
Knowledge of a foreign language. Knowledge of the educational process and system.


Skill in fluently speaking, reading, and writing a foreign language. Skill in translating written documents from a foreign language into English and from English to a foreign language.


Ability to work effectively with BCPS students, teachers and program staff. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, the families of students, clients, the public, and others. Ability to work independently.



PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work of this class is generally sedentary but may include travel to schools throughout the system.



FLSA: Non-Exempt



SALARY: $33.94 per hour (contractual)

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:



Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
